Practice levels
Classes and workshops are labelled according to three designated levels of practice:
Foundation
Suitable for all levels
The Foundation level is open to all students, including complete beginners. Classes focus on core Chen movements, basic forms and fundamental principles of Tai Ji and Qi Gong practice.
Level 2
Intermediate
Level 2 classes build on the foundation and introduce more complex forms, push hands applications and deeper exploration of Chen style principles. Students should have completed Foundation level study.
Level 3
Advanced
Level 3 classes are for advanced practitioners and cover sophisticated forms, weapons training and advanced applications. Entry is by assessment.
Term structure
Classes are organised across three terms of approximately 12 weeks each: January to Easter, May to Summer, September to Christmas.
Assessments
Shifu Liu periodically offers formal or informal assessment where students have the opportunity to determine their level of practice and the classes they should be attending. If any student is not sure of their level of practice they are welcome to inquire with Shifu Liu directly.
Progression pathways
The teaching has been designed to enable students to develop their practice at different speeds, namely:
Full commitment
Daily practice/attendance (gold or silver membership)
Aim to move up one level each term so that if you are a beginner, by the third term you will be eligible to attend all classes.
Moderate commitment
Daily practice, intermittent class attendance (pass system)
Aim to move up one level over the course of the year.
Low commitment
Ad hoc attendance and practice
Expect to remain at the same level throughout the year and move up one level in the following year.
